So, you’ve decided to embark on an exhilarating journey—your first flight lesson, often known as a discovery flight! Whether you are considering becoming a pilot or just eager to experience the thrill of flying, this introductory flight will give you a firsthand glimpse into the world of aviation. In this blog post, we’ll cover what you can expect on your discovery flight, ensuring that you’re well-prepared for this exciting adventure.
What is a Discovery Flight?
A discovery flight is your first taste of flying an aircraft. Typically lasting between 30 and 60 minutes, it is designed to give you a feel for piloting an airplane. You will experience takeoff, flying, and landing. It’s not just a ride—it’s an opportunity to engage with an experienced flight instructor who will guide you through the process.
This lesson is a perfect stepping stone for those considering a career in aviation or wanting to explore the possibility of flying as a hobby. Did you know that according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), nearly 70% of discovery flight participants express interest in pursuing further flight training?
Preparation: Before Your Flight
Preparation is key to making the most of your discovery flight.
First, confirm your booking with the flight school. Know the time, location, and meeting point. Aim to arrive 15 to 30 minutes early for paperwork and safety briefings.
Next, dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. Most general aviation aircraft don't have AC, so it can get pretty hot. However, if you're visiting us at Dare to Dream, we have Diamond and Cirrus aircraft with AC available. Wear closed-toed shoes, and avoid restrictive or overly loose clothing that might interfere with the controls.

Meeting Your Instructor
When you arrive, you’ll meet your flight instructor. This person will be your guide through the entire experience and will likely share your excitement! They will introduce themselves, review safety protocols, and explain what your lesson will entail.
Be prepared to ask questions! Your instructor is there to help you understand the process and clarify any concerns you may have about the aircraft or flying in general.
Pre-Flight Briefing
During the pre-flight briefing, your instructor will cover essential aspects of flying an aircraft.
You’ll learn about:
The basic parts of the plane, including cockpit controls and instruments.
Important safety measures and emergency procedures.
The flight plan for your discovery flight.
The Walkaround
Next, you’ll perform a walkaround of the aircraft. This inspection is vital. You will check the exterior for any signs of damage or wear, and your instructor will guide you on what to look for and why it’s important.
This thorough check helps build your confidence as you become familiar with the aircraft's condition, reinforcing how safety is a priority in aviation.
Time to Fly: Getting into the Cockpit
Now comes the exciting part—you’ll step into the cockpit! As you sit in the pilot's seat, take a moment to get comfortable. Your instructor will help you adjust your seat and buckle your seatbelt.
Once settled, they’ll guide you through operating the flight controls and instruments. Understanding the purpose of each button or lever is crucial, as it directly affects how the aircraft flies.
Takeoff: The Thrill of Flight
As the engines roar to life and you taxi toward the runway, anticipation builds. This is where the thrilling adventure begins! Your instructor will explain your role in the takeoff process. While they will handle most of the flying, you’ll actively participate.
The moment you lift off the ground is an experience like no other. You are leaping into the sky, and within seconds, you’ll feel the freedom and excitement of soaring above the clouds. Many first-time fliers report a rush of adrenaline and joy during this moment, and rightly so!
In the Air: Hands-on Experience
Once airborne, your instructor may let you take control of the aircraft for a short period. This is where you experience the true feeling of flying. You will learn to maneuver the aircraft, practicing gentle turns and altitude adjustments.
Feeling nervous is normal; many first-timers often feel a mix of excitement and anxiety. Just focus on your instructor’s guidance and have fun!
The Descent and Landing
After enjoying your time in the air, it’s time to head back for landing. Your instructor will explain the approach and landing procedures. This part of your flight is significant because landing is often considered one of the most critical phases of flight.
During descent, you’ll observe how an aircraft prepares for landing as you approach the runway.
Post-Flight Debrief
Congratulations! You’ve successfully completed your discovery flight. After landing, you’ll participate in a debriefing with your instructor. They will review the flight, provide feedback, and discuss your experience. This is a valuable opportunity for you to share how you felt and whether you wish to continue your flight training.
Expect to fill out some paperwork for the flight school, including a logbook where your instructor will certify you completed your first flight lesson!
What’s Next?
If your discovery flight has sparked a passion for flying, consider pursuing flight training. Discuss options with your instructor to plan your next steps. The journey to becoming a pilot, whether for leisure or as a career, is filled with amazing opportunities for growth and adventure.
